This piece is a representation of the mother character from the Grimm fairytale, The Juniper Tree.” It is also one of
three different birds described among the seven variations of “The Juniper Tree” stories from different regions in
Europe sourced during the 17th-19th centuries. The use of a fantastical bird described as golden, green, and red in
these stories emphasizes the magical elements of fairytales and the strangeness of the events that occur in the story,
in contrast to the two other birds, a raven and a white dove.
