Karagatan (Ocean) , 2022
220 x 24 x 1.5 cm (h x w x d)

In the artist's own words:“In between the skies of countless stars and the great blue of the ocean, there’s us sailing – navigating our way through it all – to reach new destinations.” I was inspired by the sight of sailboats on the waves during my trips to Boracay island in the Philippines. Entitled “Karagatan”, the Filipino word for ‘ocean’, I wanted to showcase the beauty of our waters like an infinite seascape of cloudy heavens. Since ancient times, mankind has travelled through vast oceans with the help of mapping stars in the sky. Nowadays it is a rare occurrence for many people to be able to have both clean waters and clear night skies due to light pollution in urbanized areas. Hence, the use of soft transitions from white paint and ink against a royal blue backdrop makes the image dream-like. This artwork was featured in the special exhibition “Art+ Discoveries” at the Modern and Contemporary Art Festival 2022 in Manila, one of the Philippines’ leading art fairs."
