Exterior Chinatown , 2023
270 x 169 cm (h x w)
Photography

This photo depicts the gate to LA's Chinatown, lit at night. Unknown to most tourists who visit this area, this is not LA's first Chinatown. Purposefully designed in the 1930s, this Chinatown was to act as a "New Chinatown," replacing LA's old Chinatown, which the California Supreme Court sanctioned to be destroyed to make room for Union Station. This gateway signifies a physical reminder of the long history of displacing Chinese people and other minorities in the United States. It also represents the strong history of community activism in response to such injustices. This historical record of LA Chinatown empowers new generations to protest against inequities.
