Wooden Crate

Our art piece delves into the controversial practice of mulesing, a historical agricultural procedure in Australia. The technique involves the removal of strips of skin from the sheep's breech area, often without anesthesia. Mulesing has been practiced in Australian sheep farming for decades as a preventive measure against a parasitic infection known as flystrike, which can be fatal to sheep.
Australia produces around 25% of the world’s wool. Yet, it is the last country who has not banned this technique. It is estimated that annually more than ten million lambs are museled.
We used the pallets as a representation of massive transportation of wool to deviate them from its main function and to re signify its use through art.
We believe that animal welfare should not be neglected. With the rise of fast-fashion, wool should not be the new fur.
Through this art piece, viewers are encouraged to reflect on the ethical and historical dimensions of mulesing. The goal is to raise awareness about Australia’s cruel acts against sheep’s welfare.
Let’s stop mulesing in Australia.
