Neural Intergration , 2002

Acrylic

In the artist's own words: "This painting is inspired by interpersonal therapy. Also known as the ‘talking cure’, this therapeutic process requires active involvement by two people. Rather than a passive listener, the psychotherapist engages with the experience of the patient. The mechanism whereby healing occurs during therapy is termed neural integration, involving high levels of empathy and insight from the therapist to transform dissociation of experience into integration. In these optimal conditions, healing occurs. In neurological terms, this process involves the rewiring of brain pathways. However, healing can occur in a variety of contexts, and is not exclusive to therapists, art can also mend fragmented minds. Like any activity that promotes mindfulness, engagement in artistic activities is mentally stimulating as well as deeply relaxing, hence effective in reducing anxiety. Art falls in this category. As the mind enters a state of ‘flow’ by engaging in creative projects, theta waves are activated. This translates in a state of mind that is highly beneficial for mental health and wellbeing. As an artist with a background in psychology, my research on psychotherapy provided me with the inspiration for this painting. This image came to mind, manifesting in this painting. Acrylics seemed like the obvious medium for this painting. It was challenging for me to depict the insights into the miraculous mechanisms at work between patient and psychotherapist. I hope that viewers will gain a sense of well-being by projecting themselves in this painting."
