Dye Sublimation print on Metal

ABOUT THE ARTIST
I have never been a traditional photographer, and my early career was actually in ceramic sculpture. I was born and raised in Chicago, took classes at the Art Institute of Chicago, got my B.A. from Indiana U. in Bloomington, and my MFA from Tulane University. in New Orleans. I taught college level ceramics for 30 years, but my own work evolved into mixed media painting, and photography around 2000. I am now a full time artist, living in Oakland, CA with my novelist/ poet husband Jerry Ratch.

ABOUT THIS ARTWORK
I am harnessing the breakdown of technology by photographing my TV screen when the image pixelates due to uneven reception, using the data corruption glitches that occur for aesthetic purposes. These are actual unaltered photos not created using any algorithm. It seems we are in a period in history where things are disintegrating and falling apart in the world, which is the emotional experience my work reflects. I capture the fragmenting image in a photograph before it vanishes forever.

PLEASE NOTE: The scale of this artwork has been adjusted for the purposes of this virtual exhibition.
