Visual diaries: Woven , 2021
27 x 22 cm (h x w)
Woven tapestry

This piece was created from a design that I made during drawing sessions led by Stella Man, as part of the Outside In Step Up Exploring Collections course, taught online at Glenside Hospital Museum.
The design is an abstraction of a drawing of the concertina pages of our visual diaries for the project. The blue was chosen as the hospital records show that the walls were painted blue at one time, as the colour was thought to have a therapeutic effect on the patients.
The yellow is to represent the gold stars which also featured in the interior decoration scheme. This Victorian-era attention to detail in the patient's environment is described in Henry Burdett's, "Hospitals and Asylums of the World" (Volume II, 1891). The resulting artwork is a shaped, three-dimensional woven tapestry, created by weaving specific shapes and pulling the warps together, after weaving, to construct the finished piece.
My research focused on the theme of well-being. For me, creating through the process of weaving has a vital role in maintaining my well-being.
The work was exhibited in Gosport at Yellow Edge gallery in May/June 2021.
