In 2019, the far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro allowed local farmers to burn down 20 instead of the usual 5 hectare of land to gain additional farmland. The result: 6.500 square km of burned rainforest, nearly double the size as in 2018. The Amazon rainforest is often referred to as the Earth’s Lungs as it stores between 290 to 440 billion tons of carbon dioxide, nearly half of the world’s storage of the heat trapping gas. The CO2 released through slash-and-burn farming of the worldwide rainforest contribute 10 to 20 percent to the global greenhouse effect.

The goal of the Burning Forest Festival is to demonstrate the joint need for action. This is why the Burning Forest Festival will be located in the Amazon rainforest close to Leticia, right at the triangle of Perú, Colombia and Brazil, where leaders of seven South American countries signed a pact for the Amazon on Sept. 6th 2019. The date of the festival 20-22th of Sep. refers to the World Climate Day. Participants party in the jungle with the world’s best DJs, as well as interacting with indigenous tribes chased away by the fires. There could not be a better time and place to experience the devastation of our environment, to feel the core of our problem with a burning festival, to call for change. There could not be a better reason to buy your ticket.
