In this painting, we see a woman in the foreground, pointing towards a star in the upper
left hand corner of the painting. Behind her stands a stone statue of a lamassu, its' eagle wings seemingly coming to life. The figures are awash in an explosion of rich blue colors, representative of lapis lazuli. The work represents the modern Assyrian woman reaching back into the past, and asking for support and guidance from the ancient Assyrian figure of the lamassu, who is shown coming to life in order to lend her his wings. Assyrians founded the study of astronomy, and the well known symbol of the Assyrian star is representative of the brightest star in the sky, the north star. The north star is often used as a tool for navigation, and is thus an apt symbol to use in a painting about being guided into one's future by the knowledge of their past.
