We Speak of Slavery in the Past Tense (1) , 2023

“The disdain a person can have for a human life is unfathomable. Victims of human trafficking are among the most vulnerable human beings in existence. Living in a state of fear and lacking agency over their lives, they are hidden from everyone except for the predators who exploit them. Who decides with intent to enslave other human beings; indentures a laborer who becomes caught in the labyrinth of financial debt, never to escape; condemns a child to a childhood of work? Who chooses freely to gratify their own needs by subjugating other human beings? The veil of time bonds victims past and present. Human beings are in forced servitude, and each of us can take the time to notice. How can the innate value of a life be restored to the victims of human trafficking?”
