Artist Statement

In this piece, I wanted to express the fine line between good and evil. The way that line can be distorted and different for each person. Through the melting halo I hoped to capture the essence of uneasiness a person feels when they realize the slight differences between their morals and others’. The melting halo symbolizes how far people can stretch and defend their idea of “good” before it simply can not be seen as anything but “evil”, symbolized by the red blood tear dripping down her face. However, since the red tear is still connected to the halo, it’s still a part of what they consider as good, even if that’s not what every one else sees. This piece is how I chose to present the idea of justified evil, or a slow fall from grace.

Image Description

A women with tied back hair has both her hands lifted directly under her face. She is looking up outside the frame and above her head hovers a drawn in yellow halo with a slight glow that is melting. One of the melting spots touches her left cheek like a tear and that one drop fades from a yellow to a red colour.
