Artist Biography
Katherine was raised in Lincoln, Nebraska where she was immersed in stories from and about her family and their friends. These stories captivated her and were illustrated with mementos/heirlooms, photos, and imagination. Intrigued, Katherine wanted to know as much as she could about their lives. Eventually, her interest would lead her to consider how she and her peers interact with history, memory, and the objects left behind. As an artist, Katherine is interested in capturing and preserving the world around her: people, their stories, rituals, possessions, and history. Her work constructs spaces that act as an externalization of an internal experience: memory. These constructions include traditional oil paintings, assemblage boxes, and layered prints. Katherine is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Indianapolis, teaching Foundations and Printmaking. She actively shares her scholarly pursuits in a variety of ways.

Description of Process
This piece was crafted using four layers of split-fountain pressure printing of hand-drawn and cut stencils to create the background/landscape, followed by an additional five layers of split-fountain text using handset wood and metal type. In this series, each layer subtly shifts in hue, opacity, and intensity to create a collaged landscape that mimics the feeling of driving through the prairie of the midwest at different times of the day. The text nods to the heroic nature and mythos of the landscape while also acknowledging the complicated and problematic nature of that mythos.
