Melting Days , 2023

Photography

This photo builds on Professor Cooks’ lectures about Sanford Biggers’ codeswitching and W.E.B Du Bois’ notion of double consciousness. As Du Bois makes clear, African Americans must possess two consciousnesses in order to fight violence in this country. For survival, African Americans and other minority groups have adapted by “melting” into American society. The sunset symbolizes the new beginnings and ending that they must create to bring an end to ongoing issues. Like Noah Purifoy, who was inspired by the California desert, I have been inspired by the natural environment of Southern California. This photo gives minority groups hope that they can find an entry point into the “melting” of days to survive in society and rise above hate.
