Poem

“Untitled (2023)” was inspired by design and storyline choices made in Carrie Mae Weems’ From Here I Saw What Happened And I Cried and Titus Kapher’s Ascension (2016). The poem’s division of five stanzas builds upon Kaphar’s intersectionality. The first and third stanza portray the inner monologue of a Black American boy who became an NBA player despite unfair racial discrimination. The second stanza alludes to Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection, signified in Kaphar’s work. The fourth stanza contemplates Black Americans overcoming pain from the history of lynching. The last stanza combines the three perspectives.
