A Sibyl Reading, Facing Right , c. 1517

Chiaroscuro woodcut

Based on a design by Raphael, this print of an ancient female prophet with her book of oracles is an early example of an Italian chiaroscuro woodcut. This earliest form of color printing involves successively printing multiple blocks—one for each color—to create a dynamic and multi-toned image. Here the artist emphasizes the evanescent contrast between light and dark by illuminating the scene with the flickering light of a flaming torch. (EH)
