Rouault’s face of Christ impressed on cloth belongs to a rich history of religious iconography: Saint Veronica, in wiping Christ’s face with her veil, made a permanent, miraculous image often considered the “earliest” print. Rouault’s work can thus be understood as a self-conscious “meta-image”: an impression of an impression. (BR)
