These two impressions of Memory give an invaluable insight into John Sloan’s working process: Sloan printed the lighter etching then went back and reworked the copperplate, creating a second “state” of the same composition. In addition to strengthening the dark shadows with extra lines, Sloan moved the smoking man’s hand toward his chest, revealing the drawing over which he hunches. (BR)
