I took photos and videos at two farms to document egg production.
I entered approximately ten coops, ranging in size from 25,000 to 80,000 chickens. I breathed in the suffocating air inside. The sounds of thousands of animals in the poultry houses had turned into a roar.
Chickens kept in captivity for egg production live together in cramped coops of 6-10 hens. When it was six, or on the lower side, it was because the other chickens had died.
I can't forget the curious looks of the chickens as they tilted their heads towards me. I locked eyes with many of them. None of the chickens were waiting helplessly in the corner of theirs coops. They were actively trying to escape the cage, to resist the confinement.
Chickens kept captive for egg production are held in those cages for an average of one year. They are fed with supplemental food every 25 hours to be able to lay eggs. And one day, when their productivity decreases, they are sent to the slaughterhouse.
We don't know what these animals go through every day. These photographs show a tiny part of one of their days.
This is the egg industry. We have been led to believe that we should eat eggs, and that we need eggs.

Tavukların başlarını eğerek bana meraklı bakışlarını unutamıyorum. Birçoğuyla göz göze geldim. Hiçbiri kümesin içinde bir köşede beklemiyordu. Hepsi tel kafesin arkasından çıkmak için mücadele ediyordu. Yumurta için tutsak edilen tavuklar ortalama bir yıl boyunca o kafeslerde tutuluyor. 25 saatte bir yumurta verebilmeleri için takviye gıdalarla besleniyorlar. Ve bir gün verimi azaldığında kesimhaneye gönderiliyorlar. Bu hayvanların her gün neler yaşadığını bilmiyoruz. Bu fotoğraflar onların günlerinden birinin çok küçük bir bölümünü gösteriyor.
Bu yumurta endüstrisidir. Her kahvaltıda bunları yememiz gerektiğine inandırıldık, her yemek tarifinin bağlayıcı parçası haline geldiler.
