Oily Hands Are Hard to Hold Onto , 2022

Standing on the dock of a busy jetty in Okrika, we saw a couple of boys swim and play in the water. They were competing over how long they could hold their breath underwater. This is their pass-time as they wait for the next speedboat bringing another batch of bunkered oil they'll soon offload.

Inspired by Ingrid Michaelson's lyric 'Open hands are hard to hold onto,' the image embodies a loss of agency, akin to the struggle against drowning.
