Bay of Pigs Invasion (April 17 - 20, 1961)

The battle happened at Bay of Pigs, near Playa Giron in Cuba. Cuban exiles, who were supported and financed by the US, opposed Fidel Castro’s Cuban Revolution. After extensive preparation and training, Brigade 2506 headed to Playa Giron. They defeated the local revolutionary militia, but were soon defeated by a counter-offensive by the Cuban Revolutionary Army, led by Jose Ramon Fernandez, who was later replaced by Castro. The invasion failed, all remaining rebels were captured and it did not lead to the overthrow of Castro's government. As a result, the Castro regime strengthened and cooperation between Cuba and the Soviet Union increased, while the United States' reputation deteriorated somewhat.
