This screen print portrays a miniature natural world embedded within an air conditioning unit. The artwork was inspired by the concept of "urban rewilding," which seeks to reintroduce nature to spaces where it has been lost, as a means of restoring ecological balance. While creating it, I was considering how delicate nature can be and how humans' destructive impact is gradually ruining our natural environments. As a manufactured object, the air conditioning unit serves as a symbol of energy consumption and pollution, representing something that is significantly contributing to the destruction of nature. I was also considering how humans artificially manipulate their own environmental conditions inside, at the expense of nature's stability outside.
Isobelle Munckton is a multidisciplinary artist currently working with film projections, sound, and discarded objects as expanded installations. Her work raises questions about humanity's relationship with both nature and technology, aiming to encourage viewers to reconsider their place within an ever-changing ecological landscape. Her work is inspired by natural processes, elements, forms, and non-human creatures, seeking to produce an awareness of connectivity between these things. Munckton draws upon Michel Foucault's concept of "Heterotopia", creating spatial or image-based microcosms that unite times and materials displaced from their individual origins. She is also inspired by Timothy Ingold's idea of nature as a "Meshwork".
