Help - Muffled by a mask , 2024
108 x 71 cm (h x w)
Color Photograph

I took up photography as a hobby during the isolating time of the pandemic. This piece centers around that time through themes of individual fear and helplessness tied both to the Covid-19 virus and to Asian Hate Crimes happening in the city. The medium of film photography presents a retro and vintage style, which alludes to the historical event as something global. The eyes and spirit of the individual captured in the picture speak to the concern over Asian Hate Crimes, which occurred due to the wrongful correlation between Asians and the origins of the virus being portrayed by the media at the time.
