The High Priestess

A new take on an ancient art–this sample of pieces from the Mythic Mashup Tarot uses bold and kaleidoscopic collage landscapes to characterize the essential nature of the timeless symbols of Tarot. The characters and symbols that live within a tarot deck have lived countless lives in countless places, shapeshifting and adapting, but never losing their essential form. They reflect the cycles, structures, and lessons that we all go through over the course of our individual lives. The Fool lives in every wide-eyed protagonist that leaves home for adventure, or in a newly hatched butterfly, testing its wings for the very first time. The Hermit, in the single tree swaying on a lonely hilltop, or in the solo hiker watching it.

Tarot is inherently paradoxical; everywhere and nowhere, universal and personal, constant and mercurial. My use of collage intentionally echoes this dualistic nature; it allows my pieces to be unique iterations, while still being recycled and reassembled, each made out of common materials scattered in fragments throughout the world. Each piece is familiar, created with recognizable details, and yet, something you have never seen before.
