“Spoonville” reached the Melbourne suburbs all the way from Winnersh, UK during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown 2.0. Brightly adorned wooden spoon communities sprouting out of grassy street corners, parks, verges... fun stuff for families going potty from the confines of home isolation. I had to dig deep into my utensils draw to find two, no longer fit for purpose, for my grandchildren because supermarkets had sold out. The grass growing among the spoon folk can’t be mowed unless the community is uprooted, a metaphor for how ‘normal’ has been uprooted. Time seems to have slowed and every day feels the same.
This image speaks for standing together in solidarity. No longer stirring the cooking pot, these wooden spoons are stirring the community pot - of acceptance and connectedness. Of thinking of others worse off. Of not stirring up more anxiety and tension. Of being kind, gentle and caring.
