"Sargassum seaweed which once was moderated; now due to overgrowth as a result of climate change greatly impacts the economy of St. Lucia and the Caribbean. It affects especially the hospitality and fisheries sectors.

The fishing village of Praslin, Micoud which is featured depends on the fishing and other sea products such as seamoss as their livelihood. Apart from the hydrogen sulfide and ammonia fumes which are emitted from the decaying seaweed, it also affects the eco-system by depleting the oxygen in the water thus suffocating any sea creatures in the area and trapping human garbage. The Mangroves which serve as the bays defense from sea swells and also a home to small fish and invertebrates are also affected and stressed by the Sargassum seaweed.

The control is only possible through community engagement including business and tourism sector teaming up collectively for the removal and mitigation of the seaweed."
