Reality: Twice Removed , 2021
Pastel on toned paper

In our existence, we experience reality twice removed. The first removal arrives when the physical body shuts down and one no longer retains access to the outer physical reality. This moment opens an entrance into the unconscious, welcoming a new reality different from the physical, yet just as real. The second removal, then, is the awakening, the progression back to the original reality, the detachment from the dream reality. At the end of existence, all life will end up in the dream reality, a one-way street as the outer body becomes no longer functional for existence in the physical world.

In this piece, I tried to create a contrast between the subject of the piece and the background, the dream reality versus the physical reality. My representation of the physical reality combines life and death, as chaotic as it is. The dream reality exists merely beyond the gaze of the giant eye and inside the water bubble. The human figure is deteriorating beyond the boundaries of the bubble, yet is vivid and alive inside of their dream reality, the only reality that could possibly exist for eternity.
