Denver & Rio Grande Western K–36 2–8–2 locomotive no. 488 leads an “extra” train of stock cars used for hauling cattle through La Hara, Colorado, in 1963. La Hara is located about halfway between Alamosa and Antonito on the Rio Grande’s fabled narrow–gauge system. Livestock shipments of cattle, as well as sheep, were common on the Rio Grande’s narrow–gauge lines until freight operations ended in 1968.
