The knolls are the most Westerly pieces of the great chalk syncline that undulates across Southern England. With Salisbury Plain, the Marlborough Downs, the North and South Downs and even the cliffs of Dover are connected geologically. They have a magnetic quality not just leading the eye but also the traveller and painter and form landmarks in the mind.
