This artwork depicts a scene in which a philosopher is giving a lecture on the Orrery, a mechanical model of the solar system. The audience is enchanted by the speech of the philosopher, a magician-like figure depicted in the picture. With one of the lamps representing the Sun, the mechanical model Orrery simulates the movement of the planets revolving around the Sun. The audience is comprised of people of varied ages, including two boys curiously gazing at the Orrery, a little girl who remains silent and thoughtful staring at the model, with her hands resting on the rim of the mechanical device, a young man shielding his eyes from the strong light emitted from the lamp placed at the centre, a man standing and taking notes, and another man who sat on a chair attentively listening to the explanation of the lecturer with grey hair
