I Wish I Could Sleep , 2022
graphite pencil on sketch paper

Dreams are a place to escape reality, to feel comforted by fantasy - a luxury and gift not everyone can enjoy. Suffering from mild PTSD after a home invasion, I began fearing the vulnerability of sleep and adopted an irregular sleeping pattern. The lack of sleep took a mental toll on me; I didn't dream for a long time. I sketched late at night to calm myself down. The precise strokes of lead helped me focus and assuage my anxiety. That was my way of "counting sheep," the term that inspired this drawing, where an isolated sheep dreams of sleep.
