Entangled Mycorrhizae , 2024
60 x 70 cm (h x w)
Armature wire, muslin fabric, recycled yarn, thread, beads, buttons, felt, sari material, dried Japanese maple leaves and dried rhododendron petals, machine embroidery, resin, glue, watercolour paint, acrylic paint.

This sculpture is driven by research into the symbiotic relationship between mycorrhizal
fungi and tree roots in forest landscapes. Inspired by my experience looking through my
microscope, I want to convey this sense of awe and interconnection when observing these
unnoticed details in nature, like the dancing hyphae and furled lichen adorning matted bark,
there are micro universes. Specs of white reveal infinite worlds, waiting to be discovered.
The organic knotting and weaving of plant roots and fungi is immediately translated into
material and stitch, layering different techniques to convey the multiplicity of these scenes.
Thick wire and furled cotton stabilise the structure, where thinner, more inquisitive branches
outwardly search for new connections. Additionally, buttons and are threaded throughout
the sculpture to represent the nutrient exchange between plants and fungus in the
mycorrhizal network. Mycorrhizal fungi can absorb mineral nutrients such as nitrogen and
phosphorus from soil and transfer it to plants for growth and trees supply carbohydrates in
the form of sugar and lipids, through their process of photosynthesis. Photographed by Sarah Grounds (@midlifepsychosis)
