Hosten is a multi-disciplinary visual artist, working across media encompassing drawing, printmaking and collage.
Born in Nigeria in 1982 and having migrated to the UK as a child, her work seeks to explore themes of myth and the unconscious. Her specific area of interest is the inner world; namely the psychological and mystical.
Influences in her work are often cross-cultural, drawing from a wide range of sources from Igbo cosmology to Jungian psychology.
In her current body of work; Ugonna investigates the idea of the human head as being a symbolic axis, one which connects the psychological and spiritual realm.
The project is an investigation in thinking about the obligatory journey inward- a decent into the psyche to encounter the self.
Ugonna considers the Jungian concept of the self; as being critical in creating one’s true identity, her work is an imagining of an inner world unveiled at various stages of a transformation materialising.
