Zoltan Marfys’ practice investigates the phenomena of empty spaces/empty moments. His perception is constructed from speculating ubiquitous spaces, in which he forms a sensation of vacancy and suspension. In turn he initiates an atmosphere of an uncanny uncertainty.

Landscapes, architecture, interior and exterior form the essence of his visual language, acting as both protagonist and antagonist. This methodology creates a perceived reality with abstracted qualities, provoking a representation of liminal space. The source is transformed, the occurrence of depth is decaying into surface, consequently dislocating the image from the fabric of reality.

Zoltan’s recent work is inspired by the visionary images of European modernist cinema. These prints form a small selection from an imaginary film entitled ‘Standing On The Edge’. Observed as a collection of film stills, these images capture moments of vacated space, creating the suspension of a narrative. A temps-mort, which initiates a sense of unease, and further raises an awareness of de-dramatised anxiety and an open ended resolution.

Graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in 2020 with a distinction in MA Fine Art Printmaking, Zoltan is now a visiting academic at the college. He has exhibited at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair over the last three years, along with various group shows over the last six years.
