Nicholas Houghton is a multi-media artist, based in Folkestone and London, England. He has previously lived and worked in Canada, Belgium and Portugal. His work has been exhibited in London, Bath, Cambridge, Berlin, Leuven, Gijon, Maastricht, Montreal, Toronto, and several other Canadian cities and is held in various public collections, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Art.

Houghton’s work comes out of a tradition of narrative art, while giving it an original twist. Although varied, each of these works shares certain, essential features. They juxtapose text and image. Moreover, these two components can initially appear to be in opposition, or telling different stories. Certainly the images are never a mere illustration of the text. When the relationship between the two becomes apparent, then the work become more than a sum of the two parts and reveals layers of meaning.
