Artist Statement

The name of this artwork is, In The Face of Nature. This is a self-portrait of myself and six of my nature and landscape photos. The inspiration that started this artwork was remembering that about a year ago I told myself I was going to start taking self-portraits of myself regularly, as they give me more self-confidence. After doing more thinking I decided I wanted to create a work that was a self-portrait of myself that included photos I had taken. I wanted to show that there is deeper meaning behind the photos I like to take the most. My nature and landscape photography describes who I am as a person and this artwork shows the connection I have with my photography, and with nature itself. The intention was by having my nature photography around me, blended together, and the flowers coming out of my face, that the connection I have with it could be portrayed. When I'm in nature, I feel at one with it, and when I photograph it I feel a connection to those photographs. The nature photos and myself, both being in black and white, and the trees wrapping around my face portrays that connection. The meaning of the flowers in my face being left in colour is that nature is something in my life that makes me feel “colourful” and alive.
