Artist statement

My aim in this image was to create an abstract environment for a real object. I created this environment using a prism, mirror and glass.

This image is the expression of a very personal thought. Getting lost in reality, or giving more space to reality than necessary in our imagination.

The reason why the object here is this cosmetic product instead of an empty glass is to completely block the personal interpretation of the viewer. While many meanings can be drawn from an empty glass, the product that commercialism and capitalism imposes on people is closed to interpretation. It has a brand on the label, and two lavenders are added to the bottle at the factory as proof of how natural a product is.

Everything on earth is artificial now, but we are constantly trying to be convinced by someone that some things are still natural.

The visual is completely clean and bright, despite the negativities mentioned in the previous lines. It will probably not cause any negative feelings in the viewer at first glance. The purpose is to make the viewer think while looking at the photograph again after reading the statement.

Artist Bio

Meltem Suel is a photographer with a Photography Diploma from Humber College. She is currently based between Toronto and Istanbul. She has a BFA in Graphic Design from Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts in Istanbul. Before her university education, she completed her art education in the Visual Arts program at the fine arts high school in Istanbul. She has a passion for sharing life moments and stories. She often makes use of her art and design experiences while taking her photos. She currently lives in Toronto and works as a freelance photographer.
