Artist Statement

This image came about rather unexpectedly. I was in Grand Bend visiting family when I heard about this sailboat that had become stuck on the beach in a recent storm. It was too dark to shoot when I learned about this boat, but I knew I had to figure out how to shoot it. I scouted it out in the dark, looking for how I would shoot it when the sun came up. While doing this, I talked to some people who had tried to get it out during the day. I told them my plan, and they said I would have time if I came at sunrise. When I was satisfied with my plan, I headed back to pack my gear and grab some sleep before the early morning. I arrived shortly before the sun came up to a serene beach. The water was like glass which is emphasized by this long-exposure photo. After about an hour of shooting alone on the beach, the rescue crew showed up and got to work digging the boat out and sending it on its way with minimal damage.
