ABOUT NASTASSJA SWIFT!
Sonia Sanchez, Vanessa German, West African everything and Black women are four of the main points of inspiration for Nastassja and her work. Currently based in Petersburg, VA, she creates tender sculptural fiber portraits of Black women made of wool, through a process called needle felting. Growing up as a figurative painter, Nastassja always had the desire to work sculpturally, and stumbling across needle felting during undergrad has offered 11 years of material exploration as she continues to challenge how wool can exist within her work. Nastassja was commissioned by the SCAD Museum of Art in the spring of 2023 to perform “Turning Seeds,” a collaborative and site-specific masked performance. She is the recipient of a 2023 Center for Craft: Research Fund Artist Fellowship, a 2022 VMFA Fellowship, the 2021 Dr. Doris Derby Award and currently has two sculptures on display at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore.
